See What Makes The New Ford Mustang GTD A Street

Based on the Ford Mustang GT3 racing car and with an upgraded Shelby GT500 engine, this video shows off the highlights of the 800-hp Mustang GTD.

Ford made headlines with the Ford Mustang GT3 and the brand’s return to Le Mans. Now, Ford is back with a car that we didn’t expect: the Ford Mustang GTD.

A muscle car with 800 hp is nothing new, as the Dodge Demon made up to 840 hp 5 years ago. But the kind of engineering, performance and detail in the GTD is on another level.

YouTube channel Top Gear is on hand to provide a taster of the Mustang GTD in the flesh and shows off the key features and design that make this the most impressive production Mustang ever; a point in the car’s journey where it evolves into something new.

With the car looking imposing and low-slung on the show stand, Top Gear editor-in-chief Jack Rix shows us round Ford’s most powerful muscle car. Designed to take on cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the ‘GTD’ (named after the IMSA GT3 racing class) gets inspired by Ford’s Mustang GT3 racing car and even uses key components from the racer, minus the 5.4-liter, naturally aspirated V8.

This time around, it’s an upgraded version of the Shelby Mustang GT500’s 5.2-liter, supercharged ‘Predator’ V8. It will make at least 800 hp.

But the power output isn’t the impressive feature of this machine. Its carbon fiber widebody design sits low on a track that gets widened by 4” over the standard Mustang. The front tires, Rick says, are as wide as the rear tires on a Ford GT.

Inside the optional forged magnesium alloys are carbon-ceramic brakes, and the optional titanium exhaust further saves weight.

Keeping the lightweight racer stable is an inboard push rod suspension system from the Mustang GT3, and further weight savings come courtesy of the GT3’s carbon driveshaft.

So, under the skin, the Mustang looks more like a lightweight, agile supercar than a muscle car, but from the outside there’s no denying the car’s muscle car-origins. An aggressive front splitter, big fender vents and a ridiculous wing are functional and necessary – Ford is chasing a sub-7-minute Nürburgring lap time with the GTD.

For reference, the 1914-hp Rimac Nevera went around the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 5 seconds. Sure, the 2024 Ford Mustang GTD has less than half the power of the electric hypercar, but the GTD will be far lighter than the Nevera’s 5,000-lb curb weight.

Check out Top Gear’s video above for the exciting closeups of the Mustang GTD show car, that unfortunately remains closed for the duration. According to Ford, the Mustang GTD will cost around $300,000 and will get produced in (very) limited numbers, of course.

It’s worth remembering that we are living in exciting times, where a supercar-busting Mustang with 800 hp can chase record-breaking lap times and still be legal to drive on the road. And it still doesn’t run on batteries.
