2022 Ford Maverick: 6 Things We Love About the New Pickup

Mar 20, 2024

This entry-level pickup has appealing features beyond its small size and small price tag

Ford has upended the truck scene with its new Maverick, a small pickup truck that starts at only about $20,000 with a hybrid powertrain. This compelling combination has driven such strong demand that the automaker said it was suspending taking orders this week. The diminutive four-door is positioned below the Ranger and faces another smallish newcomer, the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

To assess this intriguing model, we purchased a Maverick XLT AWD with the 2.0-liter engine for $29,965, including a $1,495 destination charge. (We will also purchase a hybrid, which goes on sale later.) Our early impressions are that the Maverick prioritizes accessibility, usability, and function over design flair and the latest tech. It brings unique ideas and solutions that add an intriguing twist to its scaled-down but otherwise pragmatic truck image.

As our truck goes through its 2,000-mile break-in process, ahead of formal testing, the Consumer Reports team has been noting several clever features. We share them below. We will follow up with a First Drive review, once we’ve logged a few hundred more miles.
